Shitamatchi Tendon Akimitsu Manila Philippines Now Open! Ebi Tendon Anago Don

Shitamatchi Tendon Akimitsu Manila Philippines Now Open! Ebi Tendon Anago Don. The award-winning tempura and tendon restaurant from Asakusa, Tokyo—Shitamatchi Tendon Akimitsu has opened in the Philippines in October 2016 as a joint venture and sharing a space with the hugely popular Ramen Nagi at Ayala Malls The 30th in Ortigas Cener. Tendon is short for Tempura Donburi which is deep fried battered prawns over a hot bowl of steamed rice and topped with a special savory and sweet sauce.

Shitamachi Tendon Akimitsu was created by Chef Tanihara Akimitsu who is the 5th generation head of the legendary Asakusa Tokyo restaurant Dote No Iseya which was started in 1873 during the time of the Samurai and claims to still serve the original recipe. Don’t expect a refined Tempura here, instead the Tempura is substantial and hearty, the batter is applied in a thick layer and the oil is strongly imbued with the rich aroma of sesame, it was how Tempura was prepared in the Tokugawa Shogunate period cooked and sold from street stalls.

We had a spectacular meal and enjoyed all the dishes we ordered including their Salmon Sashimi to start, Ebi Tendon, Mixed Tempura Set and Anago Don.

Their Ebi Tendon Set features 3 tempura-battered tiger prawns, eggplant, okra, and sweet potato and steamed rice covered with their original Tendon sauce with a portion of miso soup, pickled cabbage and sliced watermelon on the side. The erving size is generous to accommodate even the heftiest of appetites using fresh ingredients and perfectly deep fried what more could you ask for in a tendon?

Mixed Tempura Set is also quite a treat with 2 Tempura battered tiger prawns, kisu sweet fish, carrot, eggplant, beans, shitake mushroom and the best part the crunchy head of the prawn!

Aside from the tempura, the must order dish is their Anago as it is the prized delicacy of Edo Style Tempura. Anago eel is unlike the more common unagi, Anago is a saltwater eel, and has a sweeter and lighter taste. The tempura preparation has suited it well. Deep-frying doesn’t make it heavy, but it still has that richness of eel flavor.
